What You Need To Know Before Submitting To DMOZ
By Snake Eyes
Most search engines and directories that you submit your site to are controlled by bots. These bots constantly search the Internet looking or sites to index based on a websites or blogs popularity and the quality of that sites back links. In short this means that you technically don't have to even submit your site directly to them, some would even tell you not to bother submitting your site manually to the search engines. But there is one directory that you need and should submit your site to and that's DMOZ.
DMOZ also known as the Open Directory Project is a human controlled directory that's controlled by volunteer editors who manually search through submissions, analyze them and determine if they have the right stuff to be listed on their site. This is also the place where the big search engines go to index their listings such as Google, and if Google is going to them then it makes sense to get your site listed with them.
Usually though only about 10 to 20 percent of all the sites submitted ever get listed. This is for a number of reasons. Here are some things to consider when trying to get your site listed on DMOZ.
First make sure that your site isn't already listed on DMOZ, even though you have to manually submit there's always a chance that you forgot since DMOZ doesn't send an email or announce if your site has been listed. They also don't tell you if your site has been rejected either, it's kind of like submit and forget so to speak. So always check to make sure your not already listed.
3. Always make sure that the site yo submit is in the right category. For example if your website is about dog grooming and is in English, don't list it under rebuilding car engines in Russian. If your lucky an editor will see the mistake and forward your submission to the correct category, most of the time your site will get dumped because they can't be bothered. Remember their volunteers and with hundreds or even thousands of submissions depending on the category why should they waste time correcting your mistakes.
Depending on the category and the editor your site could be listed fairly quickly or it could take months, even years in some cases before it shows up on their listings. And as I mentioned up top DMOZ won't let you know if it has been listed or not. However there are free DMOZ listing checkers that can tell you if your site has been indexed or not. One I found that works really well is Searchenginegenie.com. This site offers not just a DMOZ checker but can check several things on your site.
